Wah Wah came about as the brainchild of the late, great Simon Goss and his brother Chris, alongside DJ Billy Whizz and later Oscar Goldenchild, kicking off in London in the early 90s with the first proper Wah Wah session at The Old Albany (where the Chemical Brothers started their careers too!).
After some serious underground parties, the sessions impressed the Jazz Cafe’s Adrian Gibson so much that he headhunted Simon and Chris to run the venue’s Friday night sessions, playing host to Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers, Gil Scott-Heron, Fred Wesley, Common and Pharoah Saunders to name but a few. In 1999, Simon and Chris enticed Mouseorgan’s Dom Servini to join them on their mission. Due to Chris’ pivotal role in London Elektricity (Hospital records) his involvement in Wah Wah became less pronounced, leaving Simon and Dom to run most of the club sessions and the record label alike. After Simon’s sad passing in January of 2010, it’s been left to Dom and Wah Wah recording artist Adam Scrimshire to fly the flag and take the label to the next level in Simon’s memory.
The label’s first release was the club anthem Magnetica, by long time Wah Wah associate Espen Horne (The Bobby Hughes Experience). The fantastic reception that the single received on the Camden dance floor, as well as from DJ’s worldwide, spurred the crew on to more and more releases. Since then, the label has really made its mark, releasing a number of 12s from, amongst others, Alison Crockett, Unforscene, Aaron Jerome, Landslide, The PTH Projects and 12th Floor, as well as 7-inches from Easylifenatural, Luna & Bazis, Colman Brothers, Kendra Lou & The Miracles, Stac, Gizelle Smith & The Mighty Mocambos and more, and even 10-inch pressure (check the incredible Talc release!). Artist LPs from Stac, Max Cole, Talc, Speeka, Hardkandy, Part-Time Heroes, Ashley Thomas & Scrimshire are available now as well as the popular series of Wah Wah compilations.
Club-wise you can find the Wah Wah crew running regular club & live sessions at The Vibe Bar, Favela Chic, Jazz Cafe, Corbet Place, Big Chill Bar and many, many more worldwide.

Wah Wah 45's 10th Anniversary
A little late but better than never we have some live recordings from the Wah Wah 45's 10th anniversary event at The Scala in London.
First we have superfunk from The Apples of Israel. Over the past seven years the nine-strong instrumental group has been folding cuts and scratches from every imaginable source into Big Band blares and Middle Eastern elements on top of a raw and dirty funk base, baking a thick multi-layered sonic treat. They kick ideas up and down the stage in a torrent of Decks, Horns, Double Bass, Drums and Electronic Effects. No digital samplers, no guitars or keyboards and the sounds are reinvented on the spot.

Next up we have The Part-Time Heroes which is the band of two young musicians currently residing in a very fashionable part of North London. Although their names are not known to the masses, their music soon will be, as this part-time shop assistant and part-time sandwich deliveryman, plan to convert their part-time music careers into full-time employment.

Finally to round things off we have the very soulful sound of Ashley Thomas. His music can be characterised by a fusion of classic vocal hooks and syncopated rhythms held together by beautifully crafted song structures.

It's a SCALA SPECIAL this month as we prepare for our huge annual bash. DJs and live acts represented fully here with all female beatbox act The Boxettes kicking things off in fine fashion, follwed up by a double dose of Stac collaborating with Blue Daisy and Scrimshire, as she will be doing on the night. Scrimshire also comes correct with his brand new single, featuring vocals from Resonators' Faye Houston and Captain Planet on remix duties. Then there's a little Wah Wah classic from headliners the Colman Brothers, something very special from Gideon Conn, plus brand new music from Gilles Peterson's Brownswood imprint, and a little disco pleasure a la Greg Wilson from The Emotions. Other cuts come courtesy of Amerigo Gazaway cutting up Fela and De La, GIT, DAMU, Landslide and last year's performers Hidden Orchestra. Enjoy! x
As we slip in autumn the music starts to pile up at Wah Wah Towers, and this month you're in for a treat with a plethora of electronic music from Amenta, Gladdy & Smiles, Speeka, Thundercat, Mr. Beatnik and a couple of crackers from our good friends at Jus' Like Music courtesy of B.Lewis and BUG. Indeed, there's somewhat of a UK slant to this month's proceedings with a pair of stunning cuts from Brownswood Recordings, brand new Tru Thoughts and Ninja Tune action, and some good old honest British jungle music from Cyantific and Wilkinson! And there's a something new and exclusive from Wah Wah 45s of course, in the shape of a previously unreleased Balkan monster from Hackney Colliery Band, then we finish things off in fine style with Diane Schuur's underrated version of Stevie's "As".
