Club Wahoo!

The Wahoo! DJs (a.k.a. Leftside Ensemble DJs) Sampsa Vilhunen and Vesa Yli-Pelkonen come from Helsinki, Finland, and are best known for their Wahoo! club night held at the legendary Umo Jazz House from 2001 to 2007 and after that at various other venues. Moreover, the Wahoo! DJs spin their vinyls at various other parties and club nights throughout Finland and rest of Europe.

At the present day, the broad musical spectrum of Wahoo! includes e.g. dancefloorjazz, soul, rhythm & blues, funk, disco, and Brazilian and Latin sounds from 1950's to the contemporary times. In focus are also the special Finnish pearls from these genres. While many club nights promise versatility in music on paper, these guys are naturals in really fulfilling those expectations – with all the right records.

In addition to the quality selection of wide range of music styles, Wahoo! has become an acknowledged club night for its great crowd, atmosphere and fierce dancing tradition. During the years many top Djs and live acts of the scene have performed at Wahoo! nights. Wahoo! has also hosted great “Helsinki ! Soul” all-nighters and special theme events called “A Go Go” and “The Big Shake” have become as parts of the Wahoo! context.

For more info of the forthcoming Wahoo! related gigs, check out the Facebook group called “Wahoo! with the Leftside Ensemble DJs”.

At Samurai FM the Wahoo! guys are letting it all loose, mixing up all styles necessary and unnecessary and taking a long glance to the known and unknown jewels in the past and present history of black music.

NEW WAHOO! MIX! Including the craziest children's record, best deep soul 45 i've heard in a long time, my favorite rocksteady record of all times, best James Brown track ever ;), new Turkish discovery + an appreciation for Terry Callier and Donald Byrd, r.i.p.
Have a listen!
This Wahoo! mix from February 2013 begins with a 15 min monsterous but beautiful “Spirits Free” by Lonnie Smith and continuing with B.Hutcherson’s great -77 version of “Little B’s Poem” and other jazzy niceties – with classic Wahoo! style. At the end of the selection also some soulful gems, such as Faded Lady, You Got Me Moonwalking (a brand new tune from Nicole Willis and The Soul Investigators’ LP), and a final tune from Archie Bell with the Drells!

Negro spirituals in Axelrod style, violent violins of Michel Legrand, bright library sparks of London Studio Group, wicked Indian OST, flamenco-jazz, Norwegian Xian, Japanese soul, Yugoslavian muslim funk, Brazilian psyche, Finnish fusion jazz,...and much more...

For this specific mix the inspiration probably came from the new Tarantino movie and then listening a lot to the Axelrod's concept album "Auction" with its slavery theme. Also "The Life of Pi" movie had me going through my Indian music collection and there are some fine Bollywood moments included here as well. Lately I've been raving about the new Greg Foat Group material on Jazzman and wanted to include two tracks from him in this mix.
The novelty offering in this mix is the nightclub promotion single entitled "Silvernight". This single was recorded and published in Finland but the production and keyboards as well as singing are by Paul 'Tubbs' Williams!

This time around, a superb guest mix by our good friend, fellow dj and a respected record collector Anssi Lihtonen a.k.a. Andrew Lightning.

Anssi explains:
"The building blocks for this 'THE LIGHT DEEP INSIDE' mix are rooted in my old collections of downtempo beats. My purpose is to give you lowdown calm kickback feel. I am blending in some of my favorite Aussie/NZ records with few older 60s tracks. Please enjoy the ride".
Here's a selection of some of my favourites that came out in 2012, including great soulful grooves and also more electronic tunes. I wish Happy New Year 2013 to all the listeners of Wahoo! radio shows on Samurai FM!

Recorded 27 December 2012
