High Tone live @ Dour 2010

High Tone live @ Dour 2010

The irreverent heirs of Lee Scratch Perry, brought up from an early age on the most rootsy rock steady, High Tone's universe has expanded over the last ten years, mixing strings, percussions and samples, to become a fully blossomed reference on the French dub scene. Rather than machine-based blending, the five Tones opt for a choice of live guitars / bass / drums / DJ / keyboards, in order to provide their sound with an organic texture.

High Tone have embedded their dub with sonic distortions, hip-hop gimmicks, down tempo rhythms, creating a wholly original sound. The five Lyon lads take the listener on a vivid trip, a bizarre interface between tradition and modernity.

Family Jammin' live @ Dour 2010

Family Jammin' live @ Dour 2010

Fammily Jammin' originated at the start of the millennium, fusing rock, reggae, jazz and funk, making music as they loved it, not as the world told them to. Their single-mindedness is rewarded by thrilling live atmosphere and passionate audiences. Family Jammin' are led by a singer straight outta Kingston, whose speedy, unique raga vocals are used to great effect in their ever evolving style (and line-up).

Sick Moves Radio | Dj Romanowski live in San Francisco 7.24.10

Dj Romanowski is a San Francisco legend, rocking shows back in the 90's with Dj Shadow, Cut Chemist and the legendary Future Primitive crew. He's an extremely diverse DJ, with roots in funk, disco, reggae, and hiphop, and his own production work has won world-wide acclaim. His 'Party in My Pants' album and recent studio albums with Walter Earl as Royal Earl, and local MC's Deuce Eclipse and P.E.A.C.E. on the O.P.C. project, showcase his desire to further the underground hiphop & funk movement in the Bay Area.  Recorded live July 24th, 2010 @ Madrone Lounge, in San Francisco.

The Mole
Dance music fans in Victoria and Vancouver in the 90s heard a lot of The Mole in his infancy. His mentors, believing he had a natural talent, pushed him from his DJ beginnings into music production. This natural talent was, in reality, mountains of hard work consummated in secret not unlike the rigorous discipline kung fu students undertake in those wonderful bamboo forests. For The Mole though this retreat took the form of long winters in the French and arguably the cultural capital of Canada, Montreal.

Deadbeat
Deadbeat is one Scott Monteith, a long time Montrealer and recent Berlin ex-pat who has been releasing his own special blend of dub laden, minimal electronics since 2000, for labels such as Cynosure, Musique Risquee, Scape, and Spectral to name but a few. His work has been met with consistent critical acclaim from the industry's leading publications and websites, and drawn regular performance invitations for some of the world's most respected festivals, including Barcelona's Sonar, Berlin's Transmediale, and Montreal's own MUTEK.

Mike Shannon
It's been 10 years since Mike Shannon started making a name for himself on the international techno scene as a DJ, producer and label owner. Now, having relocated to Berlin from Valencia via Montreal in 2007 he's about to crown his first decade of active service with "Memory Tree", his third full length to date, and his debut for another notable Canadian export - Richie Hawtin's Plus 8 Records. Over the years, Mike has well proven that it's not just his music that makes him such a valuable asset to the techno community, it's his total dedication to the cause.

CTM 09 Preview | Disrupt

Disrupt is Jan Gleichmar, a digital dub reggae producer who in 2004 teamed up with techno DJ Christoph Rootah to set up Jahtari, the netlabel that promotes the 8-bit ragga sound that kick-started a whole movement in digi-dub. Disrupt's first attempts on tracks in this vein were released in May 2004 on netlabel Phonocake as the A Fistful Of Dub EP. Gleichmar's formative years were spent involved with punk and gabba as a fan of Alec Empire's Digital Hardcore Recordings, Atari Teenage Riot and breakcore. In the mid-90s he discovered clicks'n'cuts and drum'n'bass and started making music with an old sampler while working odd jobs including camera assistant and construction site labourer. On a job in 1998, he met Jahtari partner Christoph Rootah, DJ and record collector.

The meeting sparked the idea for the digital laptop reggae concept. After the A Fistful Of Dub EP turned out to be a modest hit, the pair had enough motivation to start the Jahtari label in Nov 2004. Operated out of Gleichmar 's flat, the Jahtari site began offering free music from Disrupt, Rootah and others on the roster. They also invested in theory on the Jahtari Magazine where Gleichmar expounded on reggae history, the Commodore 64 and other vintage equipment. By 2006, Jahtari had started to offer releases on CD in addition to the free downloads and later produced vinyl releases too. As of 2008, it had signed more than 20 artists, among them London-based Mikey Murka (a veteran of 1980s UK digital reggae). As Disrupt, Gleichmar has received airplay from Radio 1's Mary Anne Hobbs, and drawn interest from influential imprint Werk who've since released a 12" and Disrupt's debut full-length Foundation Bit (Werk Disc, 2008), an album loaded with samples from classic sci-fi movies such as Alien, Tron, Dark Star, and THX-1138. Gleichmar is also a contributor to Playtherecords magazine.

Here we present a studio session from Disrupt alongside a live set performed at the Mungos hifi legendary club night in Glasgow. Check out the Mungo Soundsystem on the live recording each side of Disrupts set.

Disrupt and Mungos Hifi Soundsystem plays at Club Transmediale 2009 on Friday 23rd January at Club Maria.

Adrian has also contributed to the blues, with his Little Axe project with Skip McDonald, producing his album on Real World Records Champagne and Grits in 2006.

In 2003, Adrian Sherwood released his first album as a solo artist, Never Trust a Hippie? which featured collaborations with various artists such as Sly & Robbie, Steven "Lenky" Marsden, Carlton "Bubblers" Ogilvie and Jazzwad.
In 2006 he released his second album Becoming A Cliché that again featuring numerous artists such as Lee "Scratch" Perry, the late Bim Sherman, Dennis Bovell, Little Roy, Lee 'LSK' Kenny, Samia Farah, Raiz and Mark Stewart. A limited 2-disc version was released simultaneously with the second disc titled "Dub Cliché".

On beginning a solo career, Sherwood stated, "I wanted to do some of my own writing and make something that was challenging for me...As a producer, it's my job to satisfy the artist foremost. I wanted to make something that was a little more aggressive and modern. I wanted to paint a picture that was contemporary, one that specifically showed where my brain was at. I've got to the point in my life where it's time for me to call all of the shots."
