Straight No Chaser Presents Theo Parrish
People often speak of figureheads, of pioneers, of artists that swiftly achieve new states of sound and even more swiftly become a genre or a benchmark themselves. Theodore Parrish is one such artist.
Even as far back as the early KDJ releases, through the birthing of his Sound Signature imprint, and up to his recent double Lp opus, Sound Sculptures volume 1, Theo has sought to coax soul and feeling from the coldest of machinery. Ra would concur. As would the likes of Ron Hardy or Larry Heard. In fact, whether he's producing magic or telling epic tales in the mix, Theo represents jazz and music in totality. So there's no better man to compile a 'jazz' mix for the magazine of world jazz jive, the orbit of interplanetary sounds, ancient to future. Honestly, the brief was that imprecise. For a reason.
And yes, it's truly special. Vintage spiritual word and song from Haki Madhabuti sit proudly beside often-ignored post-Miles Herbie, Jean Luc Ponty, powerhouse fusion from Lenny White, Al Jarreau live, Theo on the First Floor, the mysterious Hanna, Eddie Harris and the nu-dapper Common. Vinyl all the way, crackle...pop...warmth.
From pulsating kicks and snares to electric bass, simple song and spirits of the drum you'll emerge inspired and educated. Nuf sed.
