New Bit with Helen Smith Feat. Joey Beltram
After some chivvying and chasing, New Bit is proud to present the prestigious talents of Joey Beltram in the mix on this week's show.
If you're not aware of Joey, maybe you know his seminal techno anthem, 'Energy Flash'? No? Well let me fill you in. Otherwise known as Poes to underground graffiti crews of New York City, Joey grew up as the son of a Mexican father and Italian mother in the tough Queens district. Taking to the decks at the tender age of twelve back in 1983, Joey swapped his street art for street sounds and had made his first record by 1988. Breaking into the US via a stint with Mundo music in Belgium, just two years later Beltram had scored his worldwide hit, 'Energy Flash', and took his place in the periodic table of techno.
After taking a two year break to tour, he returned to recording in 1992, this time with more obtuse musical angles and a keener electronic ear. Beltram's known for his sporadic release schedule but best bits to keep an ear out for are anything he's done for Germany's Tresor, including the deep and dangerous 'The Beyonder', and random beats laid down for the UK's twisted Warp label in the early 90's. Add to that Beltram's physically forceful live sets and tours and what we have in our midst on New Bit is a true sorcerer of sonic art, a man who will not be tethered to any one sound, let alone techno. Listen in, learn well...and then let me know your thoughts.
