"Supreme Balloon" brings Matmos back to the record shops after a two-year wait since their previous LP as a duo. But they weren't on holiday - Drew Daniel's side project, The Soft Pink Truth, classes at Harvard, exhibitions in art centres and social work have taken up both their diaries. The surprise on their seventh album is that it leaves compulsive sampladelia and conceptual juggling behind, to offer us a type of cosmic pop, made entirely with synthesisers and with special collaborations by Marshall Allen of the Sun Ra Arkestra, Jay Lesser, Keith Fullerton Whitman and the pianist Sarah Cahill. It is an exhaustive catalogue of sounds taken from the oldest and most exotic synthesisers for popular consumption.
