DJ Mag - Gotta Be Big - Martinez
"You have to do something different to stand out these days," says Swedish producer Martinez in perfect English from his studio in Copenhagen, Denmark.
"There's so many DJs out there now, the competition is tough."
It's Martinez' unique DJ style that makes him this month's pick for deck stardom, as highlighted in the latest issue of DJmag, via their 'Gotta Be Big' section.
Over the last few years, Martinez has slowly but surely built a good name for himself by remixing and producing killer dancefloor tracks that effortlessly straddle the techno and electro-house divide.
In an exclusive mix for DJmag, Martinez demonstrates his aptitude for seamlessly blending techno and house, as well as his great skills as a producer.
He's made a very special mix for DJmag - "I made re-edits for most of the tracks on the mix, and you won't hear them anywhere else," he says.
Mixed on the vinyl-mp3 interface Serato Scratch, Martinez' mix is a pumping, deep, and dark set that epitomises the sound he's nicknamed 'Cosmic House'.
"I hate playing with CDs, there's too many buttons to think about, and I just can't get into the groove.
"I have to play using vinyl, and with Serato I can play all my re-edits and remixes direct off a laptop, but still have fun on the decks."
Martinez says he's now playing every week in Europe, and has got more gigs than he can manage.
Clearly, this is one DJ that's proven talent, hard work, and uniqueness is the key to making it as a DJ in 2006.
