Wahoo!
Club Wahoo!

The Wahoo! DJs (a.k.a. Leftside Ensemble DJs) Sampsa Vilhunen and Vesa Yli-Pelkonen come from Helsinki, Finland, and are best known for their Wahoo! club night held at the legendary Umo Jazz House from 2001 to 2007 and after that at various other venues. Moreover, the Wahoo! DJs spin their vinyls at various other parties and club nights throughout Finland and rest of Europe.

At the present day, the broad musical spectrum of Wahoo! includes e.g. dancefloorjazz, soul, rhythm & blues, funk, disco, and Brazilian and Latin sounds from 1950's to the contemporary times. In focus are also the special Finnish pearls from these genres. While many club nights promise versatility in music on paper, these guys are naturals in really fulfilling those expectations – with all the right records.

In addition to the quality selection of wide range of music styles, Wahoo! has become an acknowledged club night for its great crowd, atmosphere and fierce dancing tradition. During the years many top Djs and live acts of the scene have performed at Wahoo! nights. Wahoo! has also hosted great “Helsinki ! Soul” all-nighters and special theme events called “A Go Go” and “The Big Shake” have become as parts of the Wahoo! context.

For more info of the forthcoming Wahoo! related gigs, check out the Facebook group called “Wahoo! with the Leftside Ensemble DJs”.

At Samurai FM the Wahoo! guys are letting it all loose, mixing up all styles necessary and unnecessary and taking a long glance to the known and unknown jewels in the past and present history of black music.

Well, it's a special alright: a tribute to a style called the 'hip house', late 8Ts dance music originally from Chicago, a moment in time that didn't last that long eventually... Energetic, entertaining, proper dance floor style! You remember the 'running man' move? Maybe this'll remind you!
Hip house merged hip hop lyrics with a house beat, and soul samples were sprinkled on top.
Just when you think you've had enough of this style, we'll change it to more of the acid, with Fast Eddie delivering a true classic, the "Acid Thunder".
It wouldn't be a Wahoo! show without some added versatility, thus the mix finishes off with psychedelic jazz. Enjoy folks and please bear with the technical side of the mixing - it's for home listening, not a club mix :)
Getting ready for 2012 and looking back over the ongoing year with some great tunes I enjoyed in 2011. As usual, all kinds of music styles included, also some housey bits here. Happy New Year to all the listeners of Wahoo! radio shows on Samurai FM!

Recorded 25 December 2011
For many years we have been requested to put up a special Wahoo! X-mas time mix (in Finnish: Joulumiksaus) – and here you finally have it. It is now December, you can check this out already now - or hold on and press play later on this month to really get you into the joulu/holiday mode. Enjoy!

It's a trip alright!
Nearly two hours of music I've bought in the last couple of weeks, records I grabbed in my visits to Sweden, Norway, London and Berlin, plus some gems that I got from my local dealer here in Helsinki :)
Styles ranging from jazz to garage and deep soul in the middle. So many superb tracks that have been floating under all my radars plus a few classics trown in.
Do enjoy listening!
Johan Ventus is running Across The Tracks -club night in Finland, concentrating on quality r&b, soul, rock'n'roll, garage, freakbeats, psyche and everything mod.
This mix is also promoting the forthcoming night on October 29th 2011 https://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=256614594377936
where also Wahoo! djs are represented behind the decks.
Try to make it to the night if you're around or catch the beat thru this mix.
Enjoy!
Sampsa
Here comes my second 78 rpm Wahoo! selection, which includes lots of great stuff to dance to: 50’s Rhythm & Blues, early Soul, Jitter-bug, old-time Jazz, and some Calypso and Mambo flavors, too. The 78 rpm records here have been recorded and released between 1935 and 1957. I hope you enjoy these superb vintage sounds from the times of big orchestras, epic singers, skillful vocal and rhythm groups, developing recording technology, and when DJs must have had record bags heavier than ever!

Recorded 15 October 2011
