Wahoo!
Club Wahoo!

The Wahoo! DJs (a.k.a. Leftside Ensemble DJs) Sampsa Vilhunen and Vesa Yli-Pelkonen come from Helsinki, Finland, and are best known for their Wahoo! club night held at the legendary Umo Jazz House from 2001 to 2007 and after that at various other venues. Moreover, the Wahoo! DJs spin their vinyls at various other parties and club nights throughout Finland and rest of Europe.

At the present day, the broad musical spectrum of Wahoo! includes e.g. dancefloorjazz, soul, rhythm & blues, funk, disco, and Brazilian and Latin sounds from 1950's to the contemporary times. In focus are also the special Finnish pearls from these genres. While many club nights promise versatility in music on paper, these guys are naturals in really fulfilling those expectations – with all the right records.

In addition to the quality selection of wide range of music styles, Wahoo! has become an acknowledged club night for its great crowd, atmosphere and fierce dancing tradition. During the years many top Djs and live acts of the scene have performed at Wahoo! nights. Wahoo! has also hosted great “Helsinki ! Soul” all-nighters and special theme events called “A Go Go” and “The Big Shake” have become as parts of the Wahoo! context.

For more info of the forthcoming Wahoo! related gigs, check out the Facebook group called “Wahoo! with the Leftside Ensemble DJs”.

At Samurai FM the Wahoo! guys are letting it all loose, mixing up all styles necessary and unnecessary and taking a long glance to the known and unknown jewels in the past and present history of black music.

Heyheyhey!
While cleaning the living room floors of records, decided to put a mix together. Not the first Sunday afternoon that is spent this way...
What came out is a little bit freaky combination of styles and genres! Hence the attractivity and distinctiveness from the rest?
There are many favorite tracks here, 'Dead' by Cresa Watson, 'Dark Clouds' by The Cataracts, Jan Panter and Ströer are all bloody amazing just to mention a few! :)
Jazz apology? What? Why?
Well, I was going through the playlists of my mixes among the 148 Wahoo! mixes at the Samurai.fm. What I noticed was rather alarming - a lot of absolutely seminal jazz tracks were missing from my mixes! Just by accidence of course. So I wanted to make a sincere jazzapology, and correct this by digging them out of my record shelfs, and playing them right away! :)
Lots of classics, some ultra rare Finnish jazz, and more recent goodies as well, finishing off with classic Jazz of the Tribe Called Quest.
Started going through my record shelves and playing with tunes associated with some interesting cities in America and around the world - and this is what happened!

Recorded 5 April 2012
I give You jazz, bossa, latin, blues and Russian melancholia. I give You French elegance, cool Blue Note, and the mysterious as well as the sparkling side of Brazilian jazz.

I give You Bobby "The Wild Man" Enriquez, a famous karate master in the region, who ends up using his piano as a percussive instrument in his interpretation of Senor Blues.
And Herbie Hancock who leads the Hebrew jazz ritual of the Friday night service.

I give You Wynton Kelly's gospel inspired blues swinger, and a prime example of Horace Silver in his funky bag. Fritz Pauer so powerful it nearly chokes. And Ahmad Jamal who finishes off the set with a 1974 jazz-funk beauty.

But most of all, I give You piano!

This selection includes mainly some recent music from a wide variety of genres, and a couple of older classics, too. As usual, press play, lean back... and do not resist if this makes you want to move your feet and nod you head!
