Mike Shannon Live @ MUTEK 2006

Mike Shannon Live @ MUTEK 2006

Proprietor of the Cynosure label, Mike Shannon is not only one of the most impressive DJs you've ever seen on the ones-and-twos (and sometimes threes); for over a decade he has served as one of Canadian electronic music's key figures. Now based in Valencia, Spain-having moved on from his hometown of Toronto, and later his chosen home for many years of Montreal-Shannon increasingly figures as one of global techno's pacesetters as well; just witness his label's recent releases from Latino/Euro-tronic stalwarts like Pier and Andres Bucci and Sieg Über Die Sonne, alongside Canadians Adam Marshall, Mossa, Sunaj Assassins (Shannon and Jay Hunsberger) and of course Shannon (aka John Shananigans) himself.

Shannon was a core member of Canada's minimalist explosion of the late '90s, with solo records and remixes for labels like Force Inc., Logistic, Dumb-Unit, and Musique Risquee; but more recently his work has evolved to fuse minimal techno's finely honed rhythmic instincts with classic downbeat's broader tonal palette. His new CD for ~scape, Possible Conclusions to Stories that Never End, fuses click-based percussion with rich vocal harmonies and diverse instrumentation-a complex and song-based combination that yielded unprecedented results when he performed for the first time in a laptop-plus-live-band setting at MUTEK.

Guilliaume + The Coutu Dumonts Live @ MUTEK 06

Guilliaume + The Coutu Dumonts Live @ MUTEK 06

Beginning his career as a percussionist in a funk band, Guillaume Coutu-Dumont feeds his musical passion by studying various classical and Latin strands of percussion then switching to electro-acoustic composition. After having integrated himself in a contemporary jazz ensemble with which he released two records, the influence of concrete music popularized by Peter Schaeffer, and techno ultimately led to a complete devotion to electronic production.

A prolific producer who maintains his home base in Montreal, he has gradually become known on the international scene through his diverse range of projects such as Egg, Luci, Chic Miniature, Flabbergast and the artistic collective, Racam-releases found on an equally diverse range of labels like Karat, Morris Audio, Raum and MUTEK_REC. Inspired by the different possibilities offered by fusing styles, and guided by sound experimentation, Guillaume Coutu-Dumont manipulates portions of afro beat, gospel and swing to season the basic rhythms of his solo debut. A true source for hybridized music that warrants close attention.

Alex Under Live @ MUTEK 06

Alex Under Live @ MUTEK 06

Without a doubt one of the most proeminent Spanish artists of the moment, Alex Under is known for musical projects like Dolly la Parton and Musica Charlista (with Damien Schwartz), as well as being one of the managers of Net28, the collective behind such labels as CMYK, Bemysheep and Cyclical Tracks. Since his QG Madrilene, his musical recipe is spread out little by little, achieving an impact on the world scene with the materialization of his debut LP Dispositivos de mi granja released in 2005 on Trapez.

An artist in perpetual mutation, Alex Under avoids linearity and takes pleasure in subtly changing grooves, putting in contrast different micro-sounds from techno varieties such as deep, minimal and house. Powerful bass lines, humor and emotion, and a certain dose of cerebral precision, help to create a hypnotic formula evoking an immediate physical reaction once the mental stimulus has begun. Perfect for letting yourself escape...

Mossa Live @ MUTEK 06

Mossa Live @ MUTEK 06

Ten years of classical training have left their mark on Mossa's music, while he himself eventually changed his tune to become a DJ and producer. Originating from Montreal where he started his own label, Complot Records, Mossa began his new path by putting out singles on labels as diverse as Cynosure, Circus Company and Epsilon Lab. Always received with enthusiasm by the electronic scene, his productions have passed through the hands of several accomplished names and have been remixed by Ark, John Tejada and Mike Shannon.

His instrumental background is felt in his elaborate compositions, which dynamically mix overt samples over firm electronic textures, along with typical clicks and kicks of minimal techno. With the recently released 'The Town Hall' EP, Mossa changes gears by wandering into the universe of jazz to present us with a strangely refreshing aural mixture. Consistently astounding and captivating, his set will surely leave you feeling anything but indifferent.
