Marine Parade Presents Adam Freeland and Evil 9

Adam Freeland

The English king of of nu skool breaks Adam Freeland began his reign over a new era for breakbeats with the release of his pioneering Coastal Breaks mix albums in the late '90s. He rapidly earned a reputation for being an innovative and pioneering force in dance music, stamping his mark on the club scene through his seamless blending of hip hop and electro into his deep house sets. By 1997 he stood as a considerable force on the global DJ circuit, making his mark by seamlessly throwing anything from hip-hop and electro elements to Nirvana into deep house mixes, Freeland and his three-turntable sets were by the late '90s claiming admirers such as Carl Cox, the Chemical Brothers and Sasha. In recent years, he has established a residency at key London club Fabric, and released two artist albums, Tectonic and Now & Them (Victor), which throws some surprisingly political messages into its booty-moving mix.

Adam continues to spend much of his time touring the world, pushing musical boundaries as an ambassador of the breakbeat scene.

Evil 9

They're not evil and there's only two of them, but other than not living up to their randomly chosen yet aesthetically pleasing name Tom Beaufoy and Pat Pardy in no way disappoint.

Tom and Pat first combined skills in 1998 .With Tom on decks and Pat on FX they were quickly identified as a quality DJ/Producer duo by Adam Freeland who signed them to his Marine Parade label. They've recorded three 12"s on the Marine Parade, 'Less stress/special move', 'Technology/big game hunter' and 'Cakehole' and have remixed the likes of Kinobe (Lucidity), Steve Bug + DJ T (Monsterbaze), Blaze (My beat) and Unseen Force (To be your one). Since then each of their releases has in turn distinguished Evil 9 as innovators who refuse to blend into the scene.

Recent collaborations have included work with Aesop Rock (DEFJUX) and Juice Aleem (New Flesh/Shadowless) Intended for both club and home listening it reflects Pat and Tom's heavily hip-hop influenced party roots as well as their aim to soulfully resonate with wider appeal.

For them the music has to go beyond being merely 'phat'. Deriving their musical flavour from multiple influences - hip-hop, punk, deep house, garage rock, techno and krautrock - they create an original minimalism , packed with emotive ability.
