fabric presents Kasra

Kasra Mowlavi has a reputation for possessing impeccable taste. His Critical Music label has been home to some of the most forward thinking drum & bass since the label’s inception back in 2002, and Mowlavi continues to stretch any tired expectations of the genre by housing work from esteemed new school producers like Rockwell, Sabre, Foreign Concept and Enei. A full circle progression from early releases by Calibre, Breakage and Icicle, it’s a testament to Kasra’s outlook that Critical’s integrity remains unblemished after ten years of releasing music. It hasn’t ever waned or deviated from its original goal of releasing quality drum & bass, properly and without compromise; and that’s something he’s constantly projected - in three compilations he’s compiled on Critical to date and throughout the tracklisting that makes up FABRICLIVE 62.

“ From a young age I always picked up records and tapes at home and just put them on to see what they sounded like, anything and everything from my parent’s collections. I pretty quickly became obsessed with music and buying records, and listening to John Peel on the radio until the early hours. His radio show was probably the most important part of my musical education. I remember being blown away by the spirit and energy of a lot of American underground guitar music he would play. That DIY ethic inspired me to want to run a label.” – Kasra

Raised in Heston, a monochrome suburb of West London, it was the whispy tendrils of broadcasters like Peel and the relative isolation of an area “most famous for being home to a set of motorway service stations” that motivated Kasra to explore his passion; to play in bands and begin a small cassette tape label - actively releasing “very odd, noisy, soundscape music”. Inspired in part by his Iranian father’s self made work ethic he experimented with recording techniques, guitars and tape splicing, eventually finding himself part of global network of tape traders, DIY promoters and self motivated journalists.

“Growing up a lot of my friends either liked guitar music or dance music, the two didn’t really cross over like they do now. At first I thought drum and bass was this soulless machine music, but friends would play me tape packs or new records and I grew more and more interested and excited by it. The music was raw, dark, futuristic and with an incredible energy and mood. I remember the first nights I went to, they felt like being in a dark and distant future world - the cliché of drum and bass and its links to the film Bladerunner exist for a reason.” – Kasra

Whilst the mystique of futurism that those films portray is often soundtracked by machine made mechanical whirrs or sterile drones that hint at a cold, steelized exterior that’s far removed from the ‘human’ music of the present day, it was precisely that escapism Kasra latched onto. After a youth spent making his own soundart inspired juxtapositions, he found something that combined his love of stark experimentalism with an uncompromising level of production inherent to it. Cocooned in his growing enthusiasm for the genre, he took the plunge and started the Critical label with tracks by Dphie (who later went on to release as Cyantific).

“I just wanted to be involved in the music I loved. I didn’t know anyone influential in the scene, all I had was enthusiasm, a little bit of money and an internet connection. It took a lot of going to clubs and buying drinks and ultimately doing things properly. I had experience of working at some high profile labels and wanted to adopt some of the professionalism yet still have the music as the main focus. Drum & bass has a long history of disgruntled artists not being paid for their work, I think its key to ensure contracts are done and payments are made. After all, without the music, the label is nothing.” - Kasra

And just one glance at the tracklist of his FABRICLIVE 62 mix - between the Critical dubplates, the unreleased tracks from young Russian talent Enei, Alix Perez’s VIP version of Rockwell’s breakout ‘Underpass’ and collaborations between Phace & Noisia – solidifies just how deep Kasra’s taste, and sphere of influence, within drum & bass runs. Flicking through passages of inspired experimentalism, heady rollers, junglist tangents and apocalyptic breakbeats with stylized panache, Kasra’s ascension from the business to dancefloor couldn’t possibly be cemented harder. After working club spaces the world over for a number of years, FABRICLIVE 62 marks Kasra out as a gifted DJ and a man with infallible judgment and the necessary means to use it properly.

“I wanted to put together a mix that was both a representation of what I would play at a Critical event at fabric and a snapshot of my favourite drum and bass in 2012. I wanted as much of it to be as upfront as possible but at the same time not sacrificing the quality for the sake of it being fresh. Some of the mixes I love most have been from the FABRICLIVE series so I was conscious of keeping it really high quality and having something that would do the music, and the opportunity, justice. I wanted to bring back the excitement of the tape pack (minus the over enthusiastic MC and horn sounds) so the mix was done live. There are some little imperfections here and there, I like that. It gives it some personality.”– Kasra

fabric presents Goldie

fabric presents Goldie

Goldie created his debut album, the immaculate ‘Timeless’ on his Metalheadz imprint, in 1995. 16 years later, the sentiment rings true: it sounds remarkably more progressive and idiosyncratic than ever. ‘Timeless’ as a concept defines who Goldie is, in every sense of the word. Decades from now, his music, art, charismatic gold smile (remnants of his teenage days as an alchemist, selling gold teeth in New York) and larger-than-life aura will still intrigue and confound even the most jaded of historians.

There are many faces to the complex creative, far beyond his musical accomplishments as an iconic and ever-evolving producer, being largely responsible for Drum & Bass’ most stirring, experimental and symphonic work. Or as an uncompromising DJ that’s lit up bassbins in just about every city across the globe, for well over two decades. Or as bold leader of the iconic Metalheadz label, harnessing an international roster of groundbreaking artists. The endless list of his non-music titles are equally wideranging as they are surprising: historical graffiti artist (covering his estate with over 60 murals by the age of 17); acclaimed fine artist; author; orchestral conductor; part-time Hollywood actor; gossip column mainstay; ‘Eastenders’ character; reality TV and documentary star; father; yoga enthusiast (“This past year, I’ve done 87 classes in the UK - 20 in America and about 25 in Asia - so I’m up in the hundreds, baby.”). Perhaps his atypical background exemplifies the strength and infinite possibility of a person’s creative spirit.

"This music - this wildstyle music - is not for the faint-hearted. I tried to get the alchemy right, which I've done on this mix: each of these are standalone tunes. It is dynamic, it does take you from one extreme to the other, because for me that's what my life is like. It'll be bikram yoga one morning, then DJing long into the night. Everything is balanced, not too much of one thing. When I think of the D&B tunes on this mix, I think of them as spiritual euphoria, like I've been lifted out of something."

Goldie

As Metalheadz strongly rides into its 18th year, the label and its leader keep the focus on progression and future-geared ideals, without ever succumbing to the incessant whirrs of today’s hype machine. As the various offshoots of bass music morph around them, MDZ continue to explore and expand the confines of drum & bass with their global army. ‘FABRICLIVE 58: Goldie’ is an embodiment of the Metalheadz mantra: forever finding ways to challenge formulas and take the D&B sound into an intelligent, deeply spiritual - and downright primal - sphere. A loud and proud snapshot of his Metalheadz stable, and the likeminded artists that stay at their level on equally progressive D&B labels, the mix features some of the most cutting edge and visionary music on the genre’s helm. ‘FABRICLIVE 58’ stands as proof that their stance within the music world is, quite simply, unmovable - not today nor in the world of tomorrow. Time stands no chance.

Scuba Jungle Set - Live @ Berghain 2 Years of Substance Party

Scuba Jungle Set - Live @ Berghain 2 Years of Substance Party

Ahead of the release of Scuba's 'Triangulation' (Interpretations) the Hot Flush label boss and Substance promoter provides us with an exclusive Jungle set recorded live at his incredible 2 Years of Substance party held at Berlin's techno mecca, Berghain, back in July.

Scuba, aka Paul Rose, has been at the forefront of the dubstep scene since its birth. Having founded the innovative and influential Hotflush Recordings label in 2003, he has continually brought colour and depth to an advancing genre, expanding its sonic structure and increasing its influence on the wider electronic scene.

Following the first Scuba LP 'A Mutual Antipathy' (2008) which was remixed by Marcel Dettman, Martyn and Surgeon, 'Triangulation' (2010) took the Scuba sound to a new level. The collision of dubstep and techno has produced startling music from a wide range of producers in the last few years, none more than Scuba, and that has been well documented.

For 'Triangulation' (Interpretations), to be released on November 15th, new allure is breathed into Scuba’s originals by the likes of Will Saul & Mike Monday, FaltyDL, Deadbeat, Joe, Deadboy and Scuba himself.

fabric presents Zero T

fabric presents Zero T

In the world of drum & bass, a scene all too often segregated by superficially constructed genre confines, Zero T stands as a figurehead for a new breed of producers tearing down these boundaries and building from the ground up, creating a more open musical plane. By setting his own parameters, Zero T not only explores the full spectrum of sounds within D&B, but expands beyond it with his forward-thinking, intricately textured and overtly musical sound. It comes as little wonder that Zero T's absorbed such a plethora of wide-spanning influences that diffuse through his own music, amalgamating to create something unique and, in a word, peerless.

This excellent promo mix from Zero T supports the release of his brand new FABRICLIVE 52: compilation CD

FABRICLIVE Presents LTJ Bukem

FABRICLIVE Presents LTJ Bukem

As a preview to the new Fabric compilation put together by one of drum and bass' greatest Danny 'LTJ' Bukem we present a profile of him along with a mix that gives you a taste of the album. Here's an introduction in his own words...

"With the mix I really wanted to highlight what I'm doing as a DJ. I could've sat there with a computer and done what a lot of people do: a computer mix, which is great fun as you can do what you can't do live. But for me personally, I wanted it to be exactly what I do on a Friday night, strictly dubplates and records. I also wanted to represent people on the mix that I am working with on Good Looking, who I have a strong belief will have some longevity in what they are doing, and are going to be prolific artists in their own right. For me, it doesn't matter who the artist is, it's just about good music. That's been my ethos since day one"
