DJ Mag - Gotta Be Big - Martinez

"You have to do something different to stand out these days," says Swedish producer Martinez in perfect English from his studio in Copenhagen, Denmark.

"There's so many DJs out there now, the competition is tough."

It's Martinez' unique DJ style that makes him this month's pick for deck stardom, as highlighted in the latest issue of DJmag, via their 'Gotta Be Big' section.

Over the last few years, Martinez has slowly but surely built a good name for himself by remixing and producing killer dancefloor tracks that effortlessly straddle the techno and electro-house divide.

In an exclusive mix for DJmag, Martinez demonstrates his aptitude for seamlessly blending techno and house, as well as his great skills as a producer.

He's made a very special mix for DJmag - "I made re-edits for most of the tracks on the mix, and you won't hear them anywhere else," he says.

Mixed on the vinyl-mp3 interface Serato Scratch, Martinez' mix is a pumping, deep, and dark set that epitomises the sound he's nicknamed 'Cosmic House'.

"I hate playing with CDs, there's too many buttons to think about, and I just can't get into the groove.

"I have to play using vinyl, and with Serato I can play all my re-edits and remixes direct off a laptop, but still have fun on the decks."

Martinez says he's now playing every week in Europe, and has got more gigs than he can manage.

Clearly, this is one DJ that's proven talent, hard work, and uniqueness is the key to making it as a DJ in 2006.

    • Martinez DJmag Mix
    • The DJ guides us through his special DJmag set, track by track
    • Martinez - 'Eternal Mind' (Out Of Orbit Recordings)
    • This was my debut LP on my label Out Of Orbit recordings, and is one my absolute fave tracks. Minimal, and deep, this is a cool opener. I'm proud of it.
    • Underworld - 'Vanilla Monkey (Martinez Hungry Ghost mix)' (JBO)
    • This is my remix of a track from Underworld's new album, coming out sometime later in the year. This is deep and laidback, and works well at 5am in the morning.
    • Martinez - 'Monday Morning' (Darkroom Dub Records)
    • This is on Silicone Soul's label. It's an old track that I made during Sonar in Barcelona, one year. I would describe it as rocking tech house, the typical Martinez sound!
    • AC/OT - 'Shady People (Martinez remix)' (Superstar Recordings)
    • Tocadisco is a mate of mine, and this is my remix of one of his tunes. He said I could do whatever I wanted with it - it's great to have that artistic space. His original parts really inspired me.
    • Cantrip People - 'Fool For A Night' (Out of Orbit Recordings)
    • This is a very special record. It's probably the most exciting record we've had on Out Of Orbit recordings. It's made by Robert Leiner, an old skool Swedish techno hero of mine. This was his first EP out in eight years, and it was worth the wait!
    • Pascal Feos - 'Tres o Tres' (Level Non Zero)
    • Pascal Feos is an old producer from Frankfurt, who used to make trance in the old days. This is very hypnotic, melodic techno, and mixes perfectly in key with track five 'Fool For A Night'.
    • Turner - 'My Aeroplane Mania (Martinez remix)' (Tiny Sticks)
    • This is on a new UK label. The original is a pop track, and I love remixing tunes that aren't dance music, it's so much more challenging. This is a big room track, with a kind of progressive feel to it.
    • D-nox - 'Seven Hours (Martinez Apocalypse Now mix)' (Elec-tribe records)
    • This was one of the first remixes I did, and one of my favourites. This was a big record for me, thanks for the support.
    • Soulrack - 'Tb Or Not Tb (Martinez Reconstruction)' (Cray1 Labworks)
    • This is on a new label from Spain, run by a friend of mine. It has a Goa trance feel to it - I was a massive Goa fan in the old days. Quality.
    • Sono - 'Whatever (Martinez Dub mix)' - P.I.A.S
    • This is my latest remix, which I finished in December. It's quite housey, and I hardly used the original elements. It's very floor-friendly, with a great groove.
    • Martinez - 'Beduins' (white label)
    • This is bubbly and minimal. You won't find this record anywhere else other than on this DJmag mix, because I only play it during DJ sets at clubs. It's a perfect set filler, but doesn't have enough of an identity to gain a release on its own.
    • Martinez - 'Sunshine Stalkers' (Darkroom Dub Records)
    • I used an old track of mine for this, and rearranged the parts to create something much better. The original parts came from 'Irrational Behaviour'.
    • Inaqui Marin - 'How to play Phantomly (Nino Raro mix)' (Galaktika Records)
    • This is exactly the kind of sound I love, minimal trance at its best. It just builds and builds, a perfect 'brick' in a deep set.
    • Sleeparchive - 'Elephant Island' (white label)
    • This is super minimal techno from Germany, and an amazing DJ tool. It also mixes perfectly in key to the last track, and is a great finisher.
