Candlelight
The Candlelight Sessions was created to showcase music from across the globe for your listening pleasure.

With it's origins set in the ever inspiring haven of East London it has always been easy to find talented individuals to showcase their sound on the show. Candlelight has gone from strength to strength over the past year and what started out as a show spawned by a collective of Dub and Techno DJ's it has now grown into a genre defying series with no limits.

Every month these sessions will provide you with a mix from Candlelight resident, Billy Allen, as well as a guest mix from Dj's across the globe. There will also be new tracks from featured artists, bands and producers spanning across all genres. If its good, it gets played, simple!

Please, Please, Please feel free to leave your shouts and comments on any of the pieces and please read the descriptions on each of our guest's mixes for useful info on each artist.

Being an artist doesn't take much, just everything you got. Which means, of course, that as the process is giving you life, it is also bringing you closer to death. But it's no big deal. They are one and the same and cannot be avoided or denied. So when I totally embrace this process, this life/death, and abandon myself to it, I transcend all this meaningless gibberish and hang out with the gods. It seems to me that that is worth the price of admission.

This week on the show we have Moerbeck of Vault Series...

Growing up in Berlin and from the young age of 14 he surrounded himself within the city’s Hip-Hop and Techno scene, inspired by the creativity and passion within the scene it is here that he met like minded individuals and they began experimenting with making beats together.

As Moerbeck matured he began a fascination with the darker side of sound and found himself inspired by revolutions, riots, science fiction and post-apocalyptic worlds.

He shared this same influence and vision with his label soldiers, Sawlin & Subjected. The label they run is of course…The Vault Series.

It was specifically set up to release their own material, leaving them with zero boundaries or restrictions; Moerbeck is currently developing a live act with Subjected as well as both working on their separate productions.

Production wise, Moerbeck is a firm believer in getting the best results with any means possible, whether that is analogue or digital, he strives to make deep grinding techno using the best tools at his disposal.

Whatever is said about Moerbeck and the rest of the Vault Series crew has primarily been hear-say or rumors, these guys have done an amazing job of keeping themselves out of the lime-light so that their music can do the talking.

“Vault Series (Live)” is collaboration between Moerbeck and Subjected; they had their first performance at a Grounded Theory event back in October and recently had their second show at Berghain in January.

The label has now reached release number 8 and like all previous releases it has found itself charted by pretty much every name in the game, the huge success of the label has seen the profile of these artists rise but the guys at Vault Series have their feet firmly on the ground and remain true to the fact that the music is what’s important.

This week on the show we have somewhat of a mysterious figure and somebody who's productions have been in my crate for a while now, russian DJ and producer...Unbalance

Raised on foreign rock music, Alexander Matlahov aka Unbalance had all the chances to become a rock musician. But, when confronted with the electronic music scene for the first time he immediately realized that it is in this scene he belongs. Unbalance debuted in 2008 as a DJ, Berlin and British techno scenes occupied an important place in his musical outlook. Then, inspired by the works of such artists as Surgeon, Regis, Ben Klock, Marcel Dettmann and Mike Dehnert, he begun his own experiments with the sound. After two years combining the emotional and simultaneously technological components of the techno genre The first vinyl release titled IntentIntention was ready for release in 2010 on Dutch label Lessismorecordings, he joined such monsters as Heiko Laux, Gideon, Claudio Mate, and Estroe. The debut was very successful - the airy moist techno-dub sound was well recieved by clubbers, and, of course earned himself some fans from the community. Currently Unbalance has support in the face of Truss, Mattias Fridell, Gideon, Claudio Mate, Markus Suckut, Lenny Posso, DJ Hi-Shock, Roland M. Dill and many others. Alex himself defines his creativity as techno with different shades of moods - from deep atmospheric dub sounds to pushy and aggressive grooves, pushing the genre limits, but at the same time remaining within the framework of this techno-music. Now you can find his work on various international labels across the world such as the Ukrainian Indeks Music, Australian Gynoid Audio, Italian Sonntag Morgen and the American Thema. In his DJ sets Unbalance always stays loyal to his style of deep, pulsating sound, plunging into a hypnotic dance-floor euphoria, regardless of location -.

Enjoy!!!

This week on the show we have one of London's busiest DJ's...Chris Stanford!

2011 has been a huge year for Chris and we thought it was only right to have Chris on the show, As a DJ in London he’s played pretty much everywhere worth playing that caters for underground house & techno. In recent times Chris makes appearances for big venues and parties like fabric’s weekly Sunday night WetYourSelf also Corsica Studios, East Village, Cafe 1001, Ewer Street Car Park and more. He is also one of the residents for weekly Sunday morning after hours Jaded @Cable where he supports some very special guests that swing by from time to time such as DJ. T, Mark Henning, Konrad Black, Agaric, Pan-Pot, Alan Fitzpatrick. He also has his very own party Quantize, which started just over a year ago at Public Life and has since held parties at Basing House amongst other locations and now resides at the legendary Cafe 1001. Quantize has a taste for sounds from Berlin’s underground movement’s and is known for flying in talents like Berghain & Panorama Bar regular’s Oliver Deutcshmann, Ed Davenport and CLR’s Tommy Four Seven.

Last but by no means least, alongside partner Gareth Wild, he runs London’s hottest new techno brand EarToGround. Already they have organised label showcases with CLR and Stroboscopic Artefacts. Presenting guests like Lucy, Mike Denhert, Heinrich & Hirtenfellner, Xhin, Brian Sanhaji, Monoloc, James Ruskin, Shifted, Truss, Hans Bouffmyhre, Dario & Marco Zenker. Now just about to launch the brand as a record label, Chris has produced the first release “Programm E.P.” with his studio partner Dax J coming out October 2011 on EarToGround Records with remixes from super talented UK techno acts Shifted and Truss. This deep techno 4 track vinyl will be coming out on white label vinyl only in top record shops across Europe. This E.P is looking to set the mark for new things for Chris, beginning his journey as an underground label artist & manager, still just 27 years old, who knows what 2012 and beyond will hold for him.

Enjoy!
This week on the show we have Dutch producer...Conforce!

Conforce is a restless producer from Terschelling, Holland, who strives only to combine digital and analogue together into atmospheric, well designed pieces of music, be they of house, techno or dub descent. With such an honest mission, it's no wonder the man known as Boris Bunnik has had continued success recently, with a number of singles, EPs and albums coming on respected imprints like Delsin, Clone, Meanwhile and Rush Hour. As a live performer, too, he is garnering ever more support with gigs everywhere from New York to Tokyo helping to establish him as one of contemporary techno's finest craftsmen.

Since initially being turned on to acid and rave thanks to a tape his father found in an old abandoned house, Conforce has been keen to go his own way. Despite being influenced back then by the likes of GERD, Dave Angel and Luke Slater (whose records he often spun); early Dutch rave and techno and, more recently, by peers and friends including producers and DJs from the northern Dutch techno scene, his music simply represents a feeling inside of him, rather than any particular artist, scene or genre.

''I don't tend to think in styles. Good music explains itself. I just go with the flow and see where the musical elements lead me, so I'm very versatile: for me, music is just pure self expression so I naturally reinvent myself with every track I create. I can't do the same trick twice... I can make techno, deep stuff, dub, ambient, house, whatever.'' Proof of that sonic dexterity comes from the fact that Bunnik also records as Versalife - a moniker under which he explores more abstract, experimental and transparent electro for Clone West Coast Series.

Of course, a Conforce live set is also a very personal expression - one which manages to find a balance between techno depth and dancefloor accessibility. Although not afraid of technology and machines, the human element is an all important aspect to the Dutchman's music: deep, pulsating, atmospheric, floating... the list of superlatives goes on (and those are just the ones tastemaker store Hardwax deployed when surmising his most recent album). Pin him down at your peril, though, for whatever you think you can attribute to the man's music, it's likely the artist himself has moved onto a whole other realm entirely.

''People ask how I create certain tracks... well, they just come out or they don't. Each one records just a small phase of my life. The next time I write it could be a totally different feel or vibe.'' Whatever the vibe, though, with credentials as assured as they are, wherever Conforce decides to go, it will always be worth following.

Earlier this month he released his debut Album on Delsin Records...Escapism.

Still riding high on the praise from his last EP, Dystopian Elements, Boris Bunnik has crafted another album of deep digital and authentic analogue bliss. As well as on Delsin, it's appropriately classy labels like Clone and Rush Hour which have released Conforce's work in the past.. The results of which have helped mark out the man behind them as one of the day's most considered sonic craftsmen.

All but one of the album tracks is new and exclusive, with 'Lonely Run' the only one heard thus far, given its inclusion on the aforementioned EP. It was a track which perfectly surmised than man’s musical mission… To combine elements of futurism with real hardware, decent software and to simply go wherever it takes him, be that a landscape doused in dub, formed from a firmer techno template or built on a house groove.

As such, the aptly entitled album is a wholly immersive listen from start to finish. Operating in its own deep and subliminal world of rhythm, it goes from lateral and dubby to more upright and kicking, touching on ambient moments and the odd classist moment along the way.

Rather than ten shades of the same colour, Escapism investigates a number of different moods and tempos. Opener 'Revolt DX' for example suggests a lively pace despite being drenched in echo and reverb. 'Elude' meanwhile is a more roughshod roller torn apart by blistering synths, crisp percussion and prying claps. 'Shadows Of The Invisible' is a mysterious journey into the tense, unknown world of deep space, whilst 'Aquinas Control' floats in a murky, churning and dark underwater abyss... Like the album overall, it's hugely evocative stuff that bares little resemblance to the populist motifs of Chicago-this or Detroit-that.

From start to finish Escapism grabs your attention without being rushed, hurried or over-complicated. It's the sort of album which works on both headphones up-close, but also on a dancefloor at distant thanks to its devilish detail but palpable presence. Unsurprisingly, one of the day's most reliable producer's has turned in one of the year's finest albums...

This week we bring you a show hosted by the lovely Emika of Ninja Tune & Ostgut Ton.

Emika was kind enough to host this show for us and take us through some of the tunes that are doing it for her at the moment, including unreleased tracks from her forthcoming album titled simply 'Emika' which will be released on 3rd October 2011.

Here is a little bit more information on this weeks host:

Emika was born in the UK, of Czech heritage.

As a young woman she studied classical piano and composition, She waitressed to save up for her first Apple Mac and copy of Logic.

She was living in Bristol as the city transitioned from d&b to dubstep and she went to the first parties organised by Pinch. “I continue to be a part of this culture which has spread worldwide now.”

She now lives in Berlin, where she works as a sound designer for Native Instruments.

“I am focused on the world of sound and the power of the human voice, the instant connections it makes with listeners, in music. In general I feel there is a lack of vocabulary in the field of electronic music.”

In Berlin she discovered the legendary Berghain nightclub: “It is intense, dark, boundaryless and safe. Berghain is whatever you want it to be.”

In 2010 she began making field recordings in the Berghain. “From the recordings I made a sample library which I gave to all the resident producer/DJs to make music from. The resulting compilation of music became the club's label, Ostgut Ton's anniversary release, called 'Fünf'.

All her songs are based on narratives: “I start with an idea, a story, and then I seek to find the sound world that best dramatizes my story, making it into a song. I try very hard to stay faithful to my narratives and not fall into the trap of genre conventions which is why I’m shy of genre references."
