Both Shuya and Yoshihiro Okino began their DJ career in the late 80's in Kyoto. Like so many other Jazz DJs, the rare groove era and latterly, the Acid Jazz movement in the 90's, was the fertile ground that laid their musical roots. They met many influential people including, Paul Bradshaw from the UK magazine Straight No Chaser and Gilles Peterson. Their unit name was baptised when Gilles had mentioned Shuya and Yoshi in the Chaser article calling them the 'Kyoto Jazz Massive'!
Older brother Shuya later moved to Tokyo and managed Monday Michiru and Mondo Grosso. His project of Mondo Grosso with the hit song Soufflesh MAW REMIX is still a rare example of jazz and house being successfully fused and is an anthem with the Soul Heaven generation. His commitment to support the Jazz scene in Tokyo as a director and resident DJ for the club THE ROOM, has been, in its 10 years of history, consistently hip, musically challenging and a place to see the top name DJís from across the world in a small club.
This show is a live recording of Shuya Okino's DJ set from the Jazz Cafe in Camden, London.
